We’d like to take a moment to thank our friends on Vent and in the forums who have been so helpfully in getting our own “hive” collective started. You too can get all the good info without the snarky attitudes.

As always, we want to thank UGT-Servers.com for the continued use of the Vent server through the open beta. Remember to use the “abyss09″ promo code to save 10% on. If you have questions about UGT, or Vent servers in general, just stop by the forums.

SITE CONSTRUCTION

A special thanks goes out to Zach / Ovida who has taken the podcast to the next level with the new look of the web site, setting up the forums, and re-working the album art. Make sure you let him know how much you appreciate his efforts next time you see him in Vent or the forums.

In addition to the new look, I believe Zach was able to get the feed re-routed through iTunes, so it should be a seamless transition for many of you.

A couple of new links: Aion Guy & Tom the MMO Trucker

NEWS YOU NEED TO KNOW

iTunes Reviews: Galkon, Tom the MMO Trucker, Sean, Tyr2004, Tiny, Karajix, Thin Blue Line, Kapalla, Haelix, Phoesune, Doom Storm, Archaic Tree, Stox 33

If you were looking for a reason to play the open beta, here it is. We will be playing the 1.5 patch. Ayase says: You heard it here first, guys and girls, we’ll distribute #Aion 1.5 via BitTorrent

This Q & A session between Lani Blazier and Aion Lead Designer Yong Chan Jee reveals some interesting changes:

  1. Legion housing – Yes, it is coming!
  2. New Abyss zone – Smaller, more intense, providing greater PvPvE opportunities
  3. The integration of social networking tools (twitter, facebook, etc.) is being discussed in the development team.
  4. Mounts – Yes, they will be introduced; however, transporting players will probably not be there primary function.

CLEAN UP

I keep calling the Elyos homeland Elysium when it should be Elysea, thanks Thomas.

MAIL CALL

Aussie Andy: During the Betas I came across a common problem, one that I too took ages to work out. When armorsmithing you need to be able to make small plates, steel bolts, etc but I could not find a way to get the recipes for such items, till I sat staring at the material vendor and then saw the design tab at the top of his window!!!!

Kai V: If anyone decides to craft, do the very first work order for as long as you get skill ups from it.  Once I hit level 10 alchemy I jumped right into the next work order, which required me to purchase items from the NPC vendor.  What I did not know was, you can take the very first work order very high.  I think I kept using it until level 40 alchemy.  It is not a huge savings in the long term of the game, maybe tens of thousands, but in the beginning it helps quite a lot.

Complete Overview of a Draconic Carrier

  1. The outer designs
  2. Structure
  3. The key to trigger its appearance; fortress siege
  4. Its role; a giant dropship?
  5. Draconic Elites

Listener X: Attempting to help with the replacement of the Auctioneer-type mod recommended a certain site. Unfortunately, the following terms appeared: “Sniffer”, “Packets”, and “Because all the legal sites will never release sensitive information…”

Your agreement with NCSoft states: Please be aware that failure to comply with these rules of conduct may result in the termination of your Aion game account according to the Aion User Agreement.

Rule 20: …you will not post or distribute any utilities, emulators or other software tools related to Aion without the express written permission of NC Interactive.

Daemion: If you are new to playing a Spiritmaster, here are some great tips. Go to our forums to get more details.

  1. Don’t let the enemy get close. As a SpiritMaster, you can take on up to three enemies at once. One with your Spirit, one with Restrain to keep them rooted while you deal with the third.
  2. Never lose your cool. As a SpiritMaster, you need to keep your head and stay on top of the situation. You’re a strategist; even more so than the Sorcerer, as you have your Spirit to control in the battles as well as yourself.
  3. Set your Spirit to Rest before you cast Restrain. Restrain stops working the moment an attack successfully does damage to Restrain’s target. If you restrain and your Spirit attacks, you wasted your spell.
  4. Get your DPS working early. Cast Erosion and Chain of Earth as soon as you’ve sent your Spirit to attack your monster of choice.

Mike S: Wrote in to let us know about a forum site just for RPers called Aion Roleplayers. Even if you’ve never RPed, or don’t think you’d like to do it, it is interesting to stop by and just take a look at their forums. GREAT sense of community, and are dealing with some significant issues.

BASIC TRAINING

Grouping

Why – To help complete quests, fight mobs, or just for the social aspect.

Who – You can Group with anyone that is a member of your race, and not currently a member of another Group. Group sizes are limited to six people.

How – Simply right click on a player or their Target Bar at the top of your screen and select “Invite” from the menu that appears. The player’s status bar will appear on the left side of your screen. The group leader will have a crown above his name.

Kick from group – Right click on the player’s status bar and select the Kick from Group Option.

Loot Rules – You want to make sure this is clear! The group leader can change these. Under Distribution Settings there are three options: Free-For-All, Round-Robin, and Group Leader. There is also a way to determine what to do with the really good loot: Normal, Roll Dice, and Settle Account (Group Leader=Loot Master)

MUSIC BREAK

“Gipsy Reggae” by Kumpania Algazzara from Sintra, Portugal. They have a great blend of ska, reggae, and other international sounds. Their website is here.

MAIN TOPIC

Jake from Shadow Legion: Enchantments and enchantments stones have had me baffled since CB1. I was just wondering if you know anything about what level an enchantment stone needs to be to work on a certain item and what kind of bonuses they actually give.

Here is a list of all available manastones broken down by level.

Here is a link to a list of all the craftable manastones recipes.

Here is a visual of that godstone interface.

Here is a listing of the godstones and their effects.

Here is a complete list of items and their respective enchantment buffs.

Besides the specific link above, here is a great guide to equipment enhancement found over at Aion Armory.

Zephyr Delivery

Aria: When you are in Pandemonium, ( I am assuming this is the same for the Elyos capital, too) and you are looking for a quest person who is housed within the city, click the Locate button for the NPC and when you close the menu you will see a sparkling fairy in the distance. Follow the fairy and it will take you right to whom you are looking for.

Adam E: Sent us some info on Aion Tube, a site dedicated to Aion videos. Keep an eye on this site to see if it continues to grow.

Gratz to Team TSG (Valrath, Veex, and Zilea) for winning the  2009 Blizzcon 3v3 Arena Tournament. We had a good time talking in Vent and watching on the live feed. As a side note, it appears that many WoW top-ranked guilds and players are coming over to Aion.

Beta Believe It!

Tony August 27th, 2009

Finally, some news!

The Open Beta, Pre-select, and Head start program dates have been announced today by NCsoft.

Open Beta will commence on September 6th, and run through to September 13th, with a level cap of 30.

The Pre-select program, which allows pre-order customers to select their character name and server in advance, will begin on September 18th, with the headstart program beginning two days later on the 20th.

Forums Are Up, Transition Complete

Tony August 23rd, 2009

Although you may hear the occasional echo of a distant hammer, the new web site and forums are up and running thanks to Zach R. Just select the “Forums” tab on the front page of this web site and you’ll be taken directly to the forums (promise, no Rick Rolling here!).

Similarly, I believe that Zach has pulled the rabbit out of the iTunes hat and made it so that the transition would not interrupt your current subscription. Please be aware that we will be closing the original site in about a week once everyone has had a chance to pick up the new feed.

If you want to hook up with other listeners, try to get info on a game-related topic, or simply learn what a “mullet with headlights” looks like, then go to the forums, register, and join in the fun.

NEWS YOU NEED TO KNOW:

iTunes review: Syn, Duke, Jah Lion Sendo, Joeggalo, Gurtler, Nashness, and PandamanWoW – Thanks!
NCSoft has announced that Aion has gone Gold – Released to manufacturing. Read more here.

NCsoft’s Q2 Profits Jump 451% Today the Korean MMO publisher announced its second-quarter and first-half earnings, noting that net income was up a whopping 451% in Q2, totaling 33.75 billion Korean won (US$27.3 million). Sales were up 70% to 137.77 billion Korean won.

Closed beta testers update your passwords: On July 29, 2009, we made updates to our Aion account system, and at that same time, launched accounts ready for the live game. If you are a current closed beta participant, you should update your password to ready your account for the live version of Aion. Step by step instructions.

What’s going on with RP Servers? Ayase says: I don’t think it’s in our current plans to release Aion with designated role-playing servers. That said, there will of course be free reign to select an unofficial one if there’s the manpower for it. Down the line, we’ll see what kind of response we are getting and how the situation evolves. We want to keep all our severs immersible, however, so you will definitely see numbers disallowed in character names, and offensive names dealt with in due manner.

Upgrade to CE edition? Ayase says:  Sorry about that Atreides, it should be for everyone, regardless of how you purchased the game, or even if you didn’t purchase the game at all (if you don’t have the game — the upgrade key will be added as Unused to your NCsoft account).

CLEAN-UP

Alts do count towards the member limit for a legion. I can see every legion having a “main” legion and an “alt” legion.

As for a listener guild, Lori and I will not be starting one due primarily to the member cap and time constraints. We truly hope that the audience members take advantage of this site and the forums to connect with each other.

MAIL CALL

Tubbly: First, Has Ncsoft any plans to add a swimming feature in Aion? This is a real let down for me and I’m sure I’m not the only one thinking this. When I’m underwater it looks like I’m not in water and running like normal yet I receive damage.

Ayase says, “Rest assured that all the issues you bring up are always forwarded and brought up internally, be that GameGuard, swimming, inverted mouse look or more customization with the UI. I have a quite impressively sized list with items that I know you guys would love to see in the game.”
Will it be possible to still purchase Aions Collectors Edition later on around September?

NCsoft’s official partner retailers. However, the CE edition is still available directly from NCsoft , but for “Digital purchase only. No physical box will be shipped.”

Also I would like to know, is there a 100% chance there will be an open beta for Aion in NA and EU?
MMORPG.com interview on July 20th with Jon Wood and Lani Blazier 7/20/09:
MMORPG: Are you currently planning to have an open beta prior to the NA / EU launch?

Lani Blazier: Yes, we are. We haven’t released any details yet but our closed/open beta schedules can be found on the main page of our official website: www.aiononline.com.

Masterkiter / Bulzibob: Hi fellow Aioners! Stumbled upon your podcast while browsing iTunes and wow what a great show you have there! You complement each other perfectly, motor mouth Tony and beautiful voiced Lori!

Do you know if there are free camera settings? The setting you mentioned where you can look over the shoulder is great but I would also be able to set the camera to view up or to the side and leave it there while I run forward.
Ayase said: “Yep, I can confirm that this has been reported to us during our testing and that we will be looking into it to see what can be done…It’s in my report – so we’ll see if any feasible solutions exist to improve upon what we have.”

Justin M. / Xynis: Just an update for your Templar question from last week. The Templars do not get a ranged weapon, as they have a ranged taunt they get early on, as well as later getting a prayer that pulls the enemy close to them. This is their only ranged abilities in the game, and so it makes up there most glaring weakness which is distance. Keep up the great show. Shout out to my guild Xen of Onslaught!!

I see your shout and raise you a link in the show

Jakob from Denmark: On the topic of gliding, do not touch your controls (apart from turning left and right), you will get little random updrafts that vastly extend your glide range, and also means you can usually glide over flat ground.

Pinstar: Have you ever thought of making a pair of characters specifically to duo with your wife when Aion goes live? You don’t play those characters unless you are both playing and both in the same group. This keeps the character’s relative levels even, and makes sure you are always on the same leg of a quest chain.

Tiago from Brazil: I am a Brazilian man and I’ve just heard your podcast episode 3. I didn’t understand all you talked about due to my restricted english. The part that I absorbed, I liked so much. I’m using your podcast for practicing my English and to improve my listening skills. Check out the Portuguese podcast here.

Glad you’re here, and I’ll have to quite being lazy with my annunciation.

Michel K. / Thrace: Could you please mention the Duth Aion community on your show, for those that aren’t aware yet of it? The website is www.legionsofaion.com

Chris G. / Oxycotton (Ps. at least my name isn’t w0000t!):  There are no bonus stats for healing spells! Thus, there is no way for me to increase the amount I heal. What are your thoughts on this?

I believe your healing will keep pace with the party’s needs, and you will now be able to increase your survivability as you stack HP.

Hamish / Mernin from Australia: I did a bit of nosing about over the weekend regarding plans for the “unofficial” oceanic server, and some of the guys in my legion pointed out this site: www.aionaustralia.com This would seem to be the main site for those of us lurking down this end of the world.

Jeremy K.: I am 16 years of age and I was wondering, do you think age has a say in the level of overall maturity of a player? Have you had any instances where your in game pal was really a teenager and you never knew?

Yes, age is a way to generalize, but that breaks down when applied to individuals. I have played with many teenagers, but my expectations are the same of anyone I play with. Be courteous, respectful, willing to learn, and have a good sense of humor.

Tom The MMO Trucker: While questing in the 12-13ish area I died. It was then I realized I did not set my home to the nearest location because I didn’t have enough money. Now I was stuck in the capital city and could not travel back to where I was questing because I was broke. But wait…. there was that repeatable quest!!!…. Two Deliveries later and I had enough to travel back to my questing area.

Jeracan from Norway: I have looked but haven’t found any settings to turn off the ‘voice’ for each spell being cast as mage or cleric.

Agreed, that will be coming in version 1.5 (the version we get at live)

And if I may end this with a warm shout-out to everyone listening, in every corner of the world, don’t forget MMOs can be addictive as heck. Turn off your computer after a long day of gaming, go out with your loved ones, and forget about the game for a little bit. It feels so much better to sit down again later, after you spend time with your family and the people that care about you.

BASIC TRAINING

Situational Awareness: Beware backing-up, knock-back effects,  and patrols

Pinstar: When you click on a mob that is naturally aggressive look at your minimap. In addition to showing the dot of the mob you have selected, you’ll find a miniature radar circle spinning around them. That is their agro radius.

Jakob from Denmark: On the topic of quest mobs, certain types of similar mobs can share respawn points. If you kill everything you keep the respawn points clear, and open for the chance that the type you want will spawn next.

MUSIC BREAK

“Am I Strange” by Ezra Thomas from Dallas, Tx. Check them out here.

SPECIAL FEATURE

“Tiny” joins us to share his experiences as he moved his level 25 Gladiator into The Abyss for the first time.

MAIN TOPIC

This week we discuss methods for selecting the faction you will play. Thanks go to Ed “El-EE-OS” McGee for suggesting it.

We recommend you think about these issues:

  1. Social – Play with your friends and family
  2. Back story, Read the lore books
  3. Aesthetics, Do you like the way it looks, or better yet “feels”

Factions will be relatively evenly balanced. You can’t second guess yourself by basing your decision on what someone else is doing.

Zephyr Delivery

Pinstar: Playing on your earlier mention of how the ‘express mail’ feature works, I’d call your new segment the “Zephyr Special Delivery”

There is new Aion wallpaper over at AionSource.

The FL0AH0A Incident: Much to our amusement and chagrin, we’ve discovered that the “O”s in FLOAHOA are actually zeros! Our apologizes to the grouchy old guy in Seattle who doesn’t understand why people keep calling his house asking for a Miss Flo Ahoa. However, the call-in number, 1-206-350-2402, really is good. Try it!

NEWS YOU NEED TO KNOW
Thanks go out to Badluck919 and Ovida for a couple of very nice reviews on iTunes.

May 2009, NCsoft® Corporation reported earnings results for 2009 Q1. Sales came to KRW 133.4 billion ($USD 107.7 million/€EUR 79.2 million). I predict these figures will significantly increase with the full western release of Aion.  We’ll check back for Q2 and Q3 figures.

CLEAN-UP
Contrary to what we said last week, Warp at Aion Insider recommends that you join a Legion now. He makes some great points, so go check out what he had to say.

SPECIAL FEATURE
We are not airing the 2nd part of the interview with Our Buddy Don (OBD), as we know much more now than we did when it was recorded. Don’t fret, I feel a pre-launch special coming on!

MAIN TOPIC
We thought we’d share some of the useful tips & tricks we learned during this beta weekend. Here are just a few:
- Mob markings can be numbers!  Also, there is a quick “default marking” setting.
- You can right click to resize and move your party member icons.
- Use different channels to get those bottle-neck quest items.
- When you click your scroll control on your mouse, your camera flips 180 degrees.
- Quick comparison of gear using red and green numbers.
- There are teleport statues in the main cities.
- Express mail conjures a Shugo “Zephyr Deliveryman” wherever you are to bring you a package.
- You receive experience points for gathering and crafting.

HEY, THIS IS NEAT

EP 2: /Flashdance With Bitty

Zach August 18th, 2009

The News You Need to Know:

Thanks go out to XJahnX and Evo Barricade for posting two great reviews on iTunes.  We appreciate you taking the time to do that and will try not to disappoint.

Just in case you’ve been in a coma this week:

Closed Beta Test #5, July 31 – August 3

Focus: Elyos and Asmodian levels 1-30

Starting time: 31st of July, Friday (noon PDT, 8 PM BST, 9 PM CEST)

Ending time: 3rd of August, Monday (noon PDT, 8 PM BST, 9 PM CEST)

Clean-Up:

Matt Fuss, whose piano music is in the intro, is a male. Gratz! Check out his web site here.

The most interesting thing in the forums: Creative Corner.  Where was I when all this talent was being handed out?!?

Mail Call:

  1. Shane is hoping Aion offers some complexity in its combat system. Check out all of the class skills here. Warp at Aion Insider gives a concise explanation of the progressively linked nature of skills, to include branching. Also, SkyRi at Aion Insider wrote an informative article concerning the buffs / debuffs players receive from directional movement while in combat.
  2. Shane also asks about “clicking”, keybindings, and macros.  There is an easy to follow macro guide at Learn Aion. I strongly recommend looking around while you are there. Loads of detailed info. Lightwolf over at Aion Forumshas also put together a pretty good basic guide based on his experiences in CBT 4 and has even included some nice examples for Templars.
  3. Jesse asks about game lag. We’re optimistic and hope it won’t be an issue due to the multiple channels on a single server. Just a warning, be ready for a couple minutes of start-up time.
  4. Jesse wants to earn the cheddar! Apparently Jesse wants to get on quick and earn money because he wants to know about the drop rate for in-game gold. While we felt that the kinah was indeed plentiful, I’m not sure it isn’t tweaked up for beta.
  5. Lil Timmy is looking for tank guides. Sadly but understandably, Ciderhelm over at Tankspot.com wants to see if this game grows legs before he tries to take it for a walk. Templars, perhaps you should try to tank Boss Ciderhelm. Send him a cool e-mail letting him know that Aion will be around for a long time. As luck would have it, after
recording but before posting, a new Templar class review was released at Ten Ton Hammer.
  6. Lil Timmy expressed an inner desire to become an elf and dance around on mailboxes. I encourage him to fly into The Abyss and share his smooth moves with the opposite faction.  /Flashdance for the win!

Basic Training (Noob Files):

Yes, I mixed my references, but I had a sound issue with the original bumper so reveille it is and “Basic Training” is born!

We want to make sure we always have a piece of the show for new players, and this is it.  The first piece of advice is to check out theBeginner’s Guide at Aion Online, even if you’re an experienced gamer but new to Aion.

Music Break:

Angel Lust by FakeShark-Real Zombie, check them out here. If you don’t start rocking in your seat when you listen to this song, seek medical attention immediately!

This song, and all our bed music, can also be found at musicalley.com

Special Feature:

This is part 1 of my conversation with Our Buddy Don, another experienced gamer, about some of the class mechanics we’ve encountered so far.

We were both impressed with the equipment skinning mechanic.  Learn more from Aion Insider here.

Main Topic: Legions

You can check out the levels and requirements for legions here.

Joe has a brief article entitled Finding the Right Guild at Launch over at Aion Armory which puts the search into perspective.

After a brief explanation of the general types of legions and how they appear to operate in Aion, Lori asks some more detailed questions.  It really is too much to discuss here, but if you’re new to MMOs then there’s a lot of good info.  If you’ve been around a while, it is interesting to here a newbie’s perspective.

We discuss some actual excerpts from the guild recruitment thread over at Aion Source: Asmodians and Elyos.
I laughed, I cried…

Hey, This is Neat:

First, please, please e-mail or call us with your suggestions for a new name for this segment!

You Gamers will test your system against minimum and recommended specs for Aion, tell you where you rate, and actually provide hardware upgrade recommendations.  You may need to run this through IE due to some Java script issues, and you’ll need to allow the active x controls.

Want to know about the titles you can get in the game? Here is everything you need to know.

EP 1: Closed Beta Test #4 Review

Zach August 18th, 2009

We spend our first episode talking about our experiences and perspectives on the recently completed Closed Beta Event #4. If you missed it, you MUST get your beta key for the next scheduled event from July 31st to August 3rd. For more info on how to get your beta key click here.

The intro music is “Death Waltz”, a Ryo Kunihiko composition for Aion that was arranged and reproduced by xjustamem0ryx. Click here to check out some more Aion music.

The Good:

  1. Lori’s favorite feature? The color purple! Actually, she loved the graphics and who can blame her?
  2. Tony’s favorite feature? The integrated quest log/mini-map/location function. Saves time and money!
  3. Other great features discussed include character creation, titles, spell / ability chains, cut scenes, quest logs, and crafting.

[As an added bonus, we learn how Lori became a ninja and karma immediately slapped her hand!]

The Bad:

  1. Lori’s worst feature? She doesn’t have one (of course!)
  2. Tony’s worse feature? Why, oh why, do players have the ability to set up a private store anywhere they want? A special plea to Liv and Kinslon to speak to the Supreme Aion Overlord Xaen to get rid of this “feature”
  3. Other quirky items discussed include locking the quickbars, limited starting areas, and the lack of character voices.

Music break

This week’s music break features “How Did I Google This” by Beatnik Turtle. If you liked this song – and we know you did – go check them out here for more geek-centric music.

The Other:

Some other interesting things we discovered and discussed include weird player names, slow re-gen rates, experience point loss at death, the difference between servers and channels, limited bag space, shared bank slots for your entire account, progressive quests, and DYES!

Time Out!

This week we are sending the waves of crying beta testers into the corner for a time out. You’re right, the game has bugs…because it is a beta test! If you just don’t get it, follow this link to learn about beta tests and the role of the beta tester.

Just in case you found us and haven’t been to the official Aion website, just follow this link.
